Have you ever watched your child when they are listening to music? They cannot help but move. Their little bodies start to jiggle, their feet start to bounce and their eyes light up. Seriously, watch them closely the next time music starts to play around them. Then, notice how different their behaviour is when they are watching television. With music, whether they are playing or listening, there is no vacant look and they are not mesmorised with that ‘I can’t hear you mum’ stance. No sir-ee, they are engaged, they are alive and there is a very good chance they are communicating with you or someone else in the room – through their eyes, through their smiles or through their touch. And if that's not enough here are five other reasons music is good for your kids.
According to the experts, music stimulates parts of the brain related to reading, math and emotional development. It helps the body and the mind work together. And, if you teach your child music when they’re super young it can also improve their learning ability and memory by stimulating different patterns of brain development. Yay, no more forgetting their lunchbox or library bag on the morning school run!
Music plays a huge role in helping kids gain more confidence, connect with others socially and find their voice. Once they have an instrument in their hands children are free to express themselves in any way they want. It is a way of communicating with those around them, as well as themselves. Shake those maracas, kiddos!
Did you know, one neurological study found babies as young as five months old reacted to happy songs and at nine months recognised sad songs. Music has also been found to lower stress in pregnant women and music therapy has a significantly happy effect on children in hospital. Just think about it, when was the last time you smiled, laughed or cried when you heard a certain tune?
Of course you know at Our Little Foxes we love inspiring kids’ creativity and music is one of the best things to stimulate imaginations, big or little. Even Einstein attributed music to being one of his greatest muses and often used it to get him into the right creative space. And when IBM polled 1,500 CEOs they found creativity to be the number one qualification for future leaders.
Music gets kids moving, makes them more coordinated and has also been linked to boosting immunity. According to scientists the right type of music can create a positive emotional experience, which is responsible for the secretion of immune-boosting hormones. It has also been known to help pain relief and reduce blood pressure.
We hope you had fun with your I’m A Little Musician box and your Little Foxes carry on making music wherever they go!
