Making pom poms is good fun for any aged child. The littlies will need help at all stages (but can still get very involved), but kids 4+ should just need help with the instructions. Making pom poms into finger puppets is also a really fun project (disclaimer: you can cheat and skip the pom pom making stage if you prefer, just skim to the bottom of the page).
What you'll need:
Step 1: To make the pom pom, cut two identical circles out of the cardboard (as you can see, they don't need to be perfect!). Cut a hole in the middle of each piece, and also cut a small section as per the picture below.
Step 2: Cut a piece of wool about 15cm in length and place it on one of the circles as shown above. Place the other circle on top.
Step 3: Grab your ball of wool and start wrapping the wool over the two pieces of cardboard. You want to get up to about 3-4 layers of wool if you can. The more layers, the fluffier your pom pom will be. Just make sure the two loose ends of rope from step 2 are clear of the layers.
Step 4: Once you've done your layers, grab the two loose pieces of wool, make a knot and then pull them downwards so they're clear of your layers.
Step 5: Now you can grab your scissors and place them in between the two circle layers. Just snip the wool all the way around, through the gaps between the two pieces of cardboard.
Step 6: Once you've cut all the way around, grab the two loose pieces of wool and tie them in a double knot - as tight as you can.
Step 7: Take your pom pom and start trimming it to tidy it up. The more you trim it the better, so your pom pom is soft and fluffy.
Step 8: Place the pom pom aside and grab your pipe cleaner. Wrap it around your finger a number of times, to the length of the pipe cleaner.
Step 9: Now take a second piece of pipe cleaner and form it into two bunny ears. You can then thread the remaining length of pipe cleaner down through the coils and wrap it to secure it.
Step 10: Now all you need to do is stick the pom pom to the back of the ears, stick the googly eyes on, or sew on the buttons for the eyes. If you have small fuzzy felt balls you can use one for the nose, or just use pink thread and sew 8-10 loops of thread to form a nose.
That's it!
The puppets on the left were made using pre-made fluffy balls that you can buy from any craft or fabric store. Saves a bit of time and they look pretty cute, but the pom poms are so much fun!
Enjoy :)
